Meng X et al. · Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences · 2025

Population
Community-dwelling Japanese adults aged 65+ without dementia at baseline
Participants
1,344
Intervention
No intervention; baseline serum ergothioneine
Duration
Median 11.2 years

Key finding

Higher serum ergothioneine was associated with lower incidence of all-cause dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and non-Alzheimer dementia after multivariable adjustment.

Important limitations

Observational exposure cannot establish causation or show that supplementation prevents dementia; residual confounding and reverse causation remain possible.

Editorial interpretation

A substantial prospective association that strengthens the research rationale without proving a preventive supplement effect.
